Indira Burman

Indira Burman is a philanthropist and social worker dedicated to making a transformative impact in the realms of healthcare, women empowerment and primary & secondary education. With a passion for community service, Indira has devoted her efforts to uplift economically underprivileged societies across the country. Among her notable initiatives are the establishment of Som Datt Clinics in Shakarpur, New Delhi, rehabilitation of Sundarbans Mangroves and promotion of menstrual hygiene among women in rural India.

Indira’s deep-rooted commitment to community service spans a significant period, during which she has worked with some of India’s most economically underprivileged communities. Her efforts extend to development initiatives in the realms of healthcare, women empowerment and primary & secondary education.

During her time in London, Indira played a vital role raising the funds for palliative care for cancer patients in India. Notably, she also generously funded a Chair for research in renal diseases at a prestigious college in the UK.

Indira Burman’s efforts resonate both locally and globally. She has been a driving force behind the establishment of four Som Datt Clinics in Shakarpur, New Delhi, providing essential healthcare services to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) population within a 20-km radius of each clinic. She also supported the rehabilitation of Sundarbans mangroves.

In 2017, Indira Burman initiated Kalyani, a groundbreaking project dedicated to educating rural Indian women about menstrual hygiene while providing them access to biodegradable sanitary napkins. She took a significant step in creating an alternate livelihood for rural women by establishing a manufacturing facility for biodegradable sanitary napkins. Managed by the very women it serves, this facility has become a catalyst for their financial independence.

With an aim to provide quality education to rural Indian children, Indira, in collaboration with Mr Pradip Burman, has established Gyan Anant Vidyalaya, a formal school located in Atrauli, Uttar Pradesh.

Currently, Indira Burman serves on the board of Mobius Foundation, a multi-million-dollar foundation dedicated to supporting Sustainable Development in rural India.
