Mushroom cultivation is a promising avenue for generating income in villages, providing an excellent source of livelihood with minimal investment. India produces around 40,000 metric tons of mushrooms annually, with the potential to significantly increase this output through small-scale village enterprises. For instance, a small-scale mushroom farming unit can yield an average profit of ₹1.5 lakh per year, according to the National Horticulture Board. This practice requires less land and water compared to traditional crops, making it ideal for resource-limited rural areas.
As a pilot project, Sundesh motivated one farmer to cultivate button mushrooms, and he is now earning a steady income from it. Inspired by his success, other farmers in the village are planning to adopt this practice in the coming year. By adopting mushroom cultivation, villagers can diversify their income sources, enhance food security, and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices.
