Vermicompost: Promoting Organic Farming with Red Worms
Vermicomposting is an effective practice for promoting organic farming and enhancing soil fertility, making it an attractive option for farmers in villages. In India, the adoption of organic farming has been steadily increasing, with over 2.78 million hectares of agricultural land certified as organic. Vermicomposting, which uses earthworms to convert organic waste into nutrient-rich compost, plays a crucial role in this shift.
In order to promote active participation in tree planting initiatives, we provide farmers, local panchayats, and schools with saplings of indigenous tree species which aims to promote environmental conservation and sustainability
Sundesh has been motivating farmers to adopt vermicomposting as part of their organic farming practices. For example, one hectare of land can produce up to 2-3 tons of vermicompost annually, significantly reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. Studies have shown that crops grown with vermicompost can yield 20-30% more produce compared to those using chemical fertilizers.
Farmers using vermicomposting on their farms can also sell the nutrient-rich compost, often referred to as "black gold," generating additional income. This practice not only improves soil health and crop yields but also provides a valuable source of revenue. Inspired by these benefits, more farmers are now considering vermicomposting, contributing to a growing movement towards sustainable and profitable organic farming.
Major Accomplishments:
• 145 families benefitted from vermicomposting method.
• This year 7 more farmers adopted the practice
