Skill Development Center - Nari Shakti KENDRA

Access to education and skill development programs is crucial for empowering women in rural areas. According to UN Women, investing in girls’ education and skill development can lead to a 12% increase in agricultural productivity. Skill development programs play a vital role in improving women’s access to formal employment opportunities across various sectors, including agriculture, handicrafts, and small-scale industries, thus bridging the gender gap in the workforce and contributing to poverty reduction in rural areas.

The Sustainable Development Society, in partnership with Dabur India Limited's CSR initiative, is spearheading the "Empowering Women through Vocational Training & Employment" project. This project aims to provide women in rural villages with access to beautician and vocational training, with a specific focus on cutting and tailoring. The goal is to foster self-reliance, sustainable livelihoods, and women's empowerment.

Targeting women aged 15 to 35, the project establishes Cutting-Tailoring Centers (CTCs) and Beautician Training Centers (BTCs) across multiple locations. The first Cutting-Tailoring Center was established in Saulana village in 1994–1995, while the first Beautician Center opened in Ghaziabad in 2010–11 and expanded to nearby villages. Women and girls trained at these centers undertake stitching projects within their communities, contributing to increased household income.

Key highlights of the project include:

• Oversight of two Beautician Training Centers (BTCs) and seven Cutting-Tailoring Centers (CTCs) by Sundesh across various locations.
• Provision of six months of training at these centers, with monthly reporting conducted.
• Benefitting 1399 individuals from the Beautician Training Centers and 5,608 women from the Cutting-Tailoring Centers to date.

The Nari Shakti Kendra initiative marks a significant milestone in empowering women, enhancing their employability, and promoting economic independence in rural communities.
